In dependency and neglect cases, attorneys play a critical role in ensuring that reasonable efforts are made to prevent removal, achieve timely reunification when appropriate, and finalize permanency. This program examines Tennessee's legal framework governing reasonable efforts alongside a practical overview of Tennessee's child welfare service array presented by the Tennessee Department of Children's Services and the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Participants will learn about the services available to children and families, how those services are accessed in practice, common barriers to availability, and resources that support service navigation. The session will provide practical guidance on evaluating whether reasonable efforts have been made, identifying service gaps that affect case progress, and effectively advocating for appropriate services to support safety, permanency, and positive outcomes for families.
